Zoisite, Yellow (Var: Tanzanite), 160 carats

Block D Sector Aftermath Mine, Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mts, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania

Self-collected. 32 grams. 160 carats.

The photograph does not do it justice ... the specimen is near perfect, water-clear, no chatter or blemishes.

Here's what Arkenstone says about Yellow Zoisite ...

A gemmy, transparent, tall miniature of the rare "yellow tanzanite" variety we sometimes see in the same mine that produces the more famous and more common blue tanzanite crystals. Yellow of this quality is 1 in 500, in terms of rarity. And at this size, there are relatively few larger examples, at least with such transparency. These have a unique yellow-greenish color to them and it is surprising that they occur in proximity to their blue cousins!

Owner’s note

Self-collected. My wife and I descended 30m+ into the Aftermath Mine, Block D with ~10 miners. We climbed down single-file on a series of rickety wooden ladders. The mine hole varied between 5' to 10' wide. We started digging at the ~30m level (hard to know exactly) and the miners found (2) specimens, this is one of them. At this level with 10 miners (and us) breathing became difficult because there was no oxygen being pumped into the hole. We tipped each of the miners $20 USD, they were extremely appreciative and we acquired (2) great specimens.
