A naturally developed trapiche emerald crystal from the La Pita Mine, exhibiting well-preserved prismatic morphology and the characteristic sixfold sectoral growth structure of Colombian trapiche emeralds. The crystal displays a saturated green colour, with the internal organization of the emerald growth sectors clearly visible.
The trapiche texture results from the development of a single emerald crystal into distinct growth sectors, rather than from twinning or the aggregation of separate crystals. It comprises a central pinacoidal growth domain surrounded by six radially arranged prismatic growth sectors. The sectors are separated by darker intersectoral zones containing abundant non-emerald material and inclusions, producing the characteristic six-rayed pattern associated with Colombian trapiche emeralds.
The dark radial material represents growth boundaries between the emerald sectors and may contain fine intergrowths of emerald with carbonaceous material, carbonates, albite, and trapped fluid phases. This structure is an intrinsic feature of the crystal's growth history and is not the result of subsequent cutting, polishing, or artificial modification.
The specimen is preserved as a complete natural crystal, with no cutting or alteration intended to expose or accentuate the trapiche pattern. The sixfold internal organization can therefore be observed in its original crystallographic context, preserving the relationship between the external prismatic morphology and the internal sectoral growth.
Trapiche emeralds are particularly characteristic of the Western Emerald Belt of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, where they have been documented from a limited number of deposits, including La Pita, Muzo, Coscuez, and Peñas Blancas. Their formation is associated with the complex growth history of emerald within the organic-rich, carbonate-bearing host rocks of the Western Emerald Belt.
