Common minerals are often overlooked due to their abundance; however, some of the most exceptional specimens belong precisely to these species. Quartz, the most common rock-forming mineral, exemplifies this. Studying quartz and its inclusions is critical for understanding fluid chemistry, geological evolution, and ore deposit formation. The great variety in color, crystal habits, and mineral associations makes quartz highly collectible, among these, pink quartz crystals stand out.

Pink quartz crystals are genetically distinct from massive rose quartz, which forms non-crystallized aggregates. Pink quartz crystals occur exclusively in pegmatites, typically as parallel-growth clusters overgrowing smoky quartz. Whether pink quartz and rose quartz share similar coloration mechanisms remains debated (see my previous post). To my knowledge, no detailed study has yet addressed the crystallization processes of pink quartz.

I am not an expert on quartz, I suggest potential directions based on previous studies of quartz coloration, specifically regarding dumortierite-like nanofibers and trace elements such as Ti and P. Nanofibers are confirmed in massive rose quartz, but their presence in pink quartz crystals remains uncertain. If nanofibers cause the pink coloration, future research should focus on their formation conditions. Alternatively, in the absence of inclusions, elemental substitution or structural defects could be responsible. Titanium readily substitutes for Si, controlled by temperature and growth rate, yet observed Ti concentrations in quartz do not align well with this scenario. Phosphorus is highly incompatible in quartz, possibly substituting via coupled substitution (P⁵⁺ + Al³⁺ → 2Si⁴⁺), but conditions promoting this substitution remain unclear. Additional constraints on pink quartz formation could arise from studying crystal habit or UV sensitivity.

This specimen, from a small 2023 discovery, exhibits exceptional color intensity. Association with tourmaline (deep purple) makes it an outstanding specimen to own.
