It typically forms earthy crusts, powdery coatings, or tiny hexagonal crystals, often occurring as an alteration product on other sulfide minerals like sphalerite in low-temperature hydrothermal veins and sedimentary deposits. Named in honor of Lord Greenock, a British military officer and patron of science, it serves as one of the primary commercial ores of cadmium.
