Unusual an old specimen for this area, botryoidal crystallized pyrolusite without matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous antique label from Ward's Natural Science Establishment in Rochester, New York. Complete all around. Very neat example for the species.The Kisenge Mine, located in the Dilolo territory of Lualaba Province in the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, is centered on a world-class Paleoproterozoic manganese deposit. Discovered in 1927 and developed into an active producer by 1951, the mining operations historically relied on the Benguela Railway for exporting ore before facing major disruptions and subsequent nationalization. Geologically, the deposit forms part of the southern Kasai Block of the Congo Craton and consists of east-west trending sedimentary manganese carbonate protore beds (primarily rhodochrosite) dating back roughly 2 billion years. Over prolonged periods of tropical weathering, these primary protore formations underwent extensive supergene enrichment, transforming into high-grade manganese oxide orebodies near the surface.Wards Natural Science Establishment was founded in Rochester, New York, in 1862 by naturalist Henry Augustus Ward.
