Today is the day to buy rhodonite, while specimens seem to be coming out of Brazil as this old mine is being worked again. Rhodonite at its best looks like a gem, cherry Jolly Rancher candy. While we have seen hundreds of small rhodonite from this old 1800s manganese mine, now producing specimens again in the 2010s-2020s, we have seen mostly singles with translucence and an almost glassy brightness within. Moreover, this crystal is super sharp, refined in a way where most are a little mushy and melted looking on the terminations. We were among the earliest buyers of new production and have seen much of it, if not all. Still, occasionally there is a surprise amidst the material just when you think you might become jaded: the level of transparency here, combined with internal sparkle and brightness, places it in the very tippy top percentile of pieces found. Most objects of this quality were sold by the miners as cutting rough and cut into gemstones, producing the world's finest examples of species in cut gems, with large sizes. This specimen was, in fact, found in a gem dealer's cutting rough inventory in Tucson at a show. This piece, uniquely in our experience, survived with both a quality of the crystal AND a matrix association to display that quality. It is simply unprecedented compared to all others we have seen in any size, with perfect poise, balance, and aesthetic to make it a world-class-competition-level thumbnail specimen. It is that good in person. It draws the eye immediately for the combination of shape and color. It is perhaps my personal favorite thumbnail, not the most rare or expensive, in its entire update of hoarded and fine thumbnail specimens for the middle of 2026. This thing just packs a punch well beyond its size and weight level, in terms of impact.
