Smithsonite “Stalactite”

Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Oshikoto Region, Namibia

12.9 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm

A gorgeous, large, “stalactite” with two generations of Smithsonite from the Tsumeb Mine.

The interior core is a dark metallic mineral, likely Sphalerite. Coating the core are creamy white to salmon pink micro-crystals of Smithsonite over which the large and gemmy outer covering of Smithsonite crystals have formed. The outer layer consists of colourless, gemmy and sharp crystals averaging 1 to 1.3 cm on edge with occasional crystals to 1.6 cm. These are all glassy with a brilliant reflective lustre. A large and showy display piece from the famous Tsumeb Mine!
