Calcite included by Hematite

English Calcites, particularly from Egremont, are known around the world for their recognizable forms and coloration, and high quality in general. Red examples, in large size, are very distinct and date to the early to mid-1800s! This large, cabinet-sized cluster is composed densely-packed, flattened crystals up to 4 cm across. Stacked dramatically, densely and sideways, the Calcites completely cover the classic "Cumberland" matrix. The heavily-modified edges are sharp, and some have narrow, lustrous bevels that, at just the correct angle, reflect light like pooled water in the distance. As with many Egremont Calcites, there are Hematite inclusions that give the crystals a classic, red-colored hue. Beyond the beauty and interest, what is exceptional about the Hematite is that it not only tends to follow the edges, but in many of the crystals these included regions are actually well-defined zones, creating an outstanding and subtle aesthetic. This is a very fine piece, very unusual in this size considering it dates to the 1800s. Better in person.
