The Tonglushan Mine in Hubei, China has recently produced some amazing calcites showing hematite zoning of red, within. This particular style, with sharp twinned gem crystals and the red accents, is our favorite. It would have come out in 2023-24.There are two distinct generations of calcites, the first being gemmy, razor-sharp scalenohedrons up to about 3 cm. Lying across this matrix is a magnificent, 8 cm-long, GEMMY calcite that is an unusually-tabular, twinned scalenohedron. It presents perfectly, and many of the calcites have a light dusting of hematite along the edges that makes the aesthetics even more dramatic. And if sheer beauty wasn't enough, the calcites fluoresce orange-red, with the large crystal being particularly sensitive and bright. This is a truly refined calcite specimen with so much subtlety and beauty, comparable with many top, world-wide specimens of the species. It is a time and place within the context of this productive locality, totally different from past styles. We bought these on the ground in China and prepped the larger plates; and we have not seen more of them come out in the two years since purchasing in 2024.
