Topaz on quartz, 17.8 cm, from the Xanda mine, Virgem da Lapa, Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Xanda mine was opened in 1939 and worked commercially for beryl. In 1974–1975 large numbers of independent artisanal miners worked the locality for specimens as well as ore, uncovering many gem pockets of tourmaline, blue topaz and lavender hydroxylherderite. Matrix specimens are fairly rare from this locality because explosives were used to break up the hard, unweathered pegmatite, resulting in much damage. This specimen has had a fine coating of mica removed.
