This is perhaps among the largest fine examples of the species, and the location both. Large stolzite crystals as we see in this piece are rare in the world; and large clusters completely made of giant stolzite even more so! This small, but notable, lead-zinc mine produced the best of species crystals and this piece is a superb example with crystals measuring up to an unbelievable inch across. This piece is literally off the normal charts, and comes from one find in the 1990s at the Sainte-Lucie Mine in France, a find which produced the world's largest crystals and richest specimens! They are almost never seen for sale today. Small pieces, thumbnails and miniatures, already are valued at thousands of dollars only IF they turn up. This, however, is a cabinet display piece - a large and beautiful specimen that holds its own with any collection. This cluster of tabular crystals (again to an inch or just over) have well defined faces and edges and and display a translucent, caramel color. They have a satin luster on the broad faces, and an adamantine luster on the thin faces at the edges. It also seems to be a floater, complete all around, although dull in back compared to the front view. These crystals have the same form as wulfenite: stolzite is a lead tungstate whereas wulfenite is a lead molybdate, and of course also much more common. Just a spectacular example for the species with large crystals! This comes from the personal collection of French collector and dealer Alain Martaud. Comes with a custom lucite base.
