On a molecular level, the only real difference between Graphite and Diamond is the way the atoms are arranged; while the carbon in Diamonds form in a cage shape, Graphite's carbon arranges itself in sheets (that is why we are able to write with it). On the macro scale-in this case, 19 centimeters!-the Graphite is technically amorphous/massive yet has many distinct faces that reflect light wonderfully, appearing to shoot out from a seam down the center. On the right is an aesthetically placed vein of matrix. The tactile quality of the Graphite is unusual, having a slick, almost slippery feeling to it. The Bogala Mine of Sri Lanka, where this specimen was originally mined, is very well known for its excellent specimen-quality examples. This specimen comes with a custom acrylic base.
