An exceptionally good example for peridot from Norway. This is a large crude translucent green terminated crystal without matrix. This is complete all around and shows good translucency when backlit as seen in the picture and at the end of the video. The Almklovdalen region, situated within the Vanylven municipality of More og Romsdal county in southwestern Norway, is a prominent industrial extraction site famous for its massive ultramafic rock deposits. Geologically, the area is dominated by the Almklovdalen peridotite massif, a highly refractory upper mantle fragment tectonically emplaced into Precambrian basement gneisses of the Western Gneiss Region. The deposit consists predominantly of exceptionally high-purity dunite and harzburgite, interspersed with localized lenses of garnet peridotite, chlorite-rich schists, and eclogite. Large-scale quarrying operations in the valley, most notably at the Gusdal Olivine Pit near Aheim, began in the first half of the twentieth century to exploit the dunite for its exceptionally high olivine content. Active commercial extraction expanded significantly under industrial management during the 1940s and 1950s, and open-pit quarrying continues into the present day to supply olivine globally as a critical refractory material, slag conditioner, and industrial abrasive.
