Crystal ClassicsFeatured
Tucson, Arizona, USAA metallic, silvery-grey, single crystal of Glaucodot measures to 2 cm from the copper and cobalt deposit at Håkansboda in Västmanland, Sweden. Glaucodot is a rare cobalt iron arsenic sulphide and its crystals were much rarer than those of Cobaltite from this deposit. The mine is very old, dating back to 1613 and was worked until 1905. There is no matrix attached to the specimen and viewed from the front, the crystal habit is near-perfect with sharp edges and well developed faces; it really is a fine crystal of this rare species. The dominant feature of the back of the prism is its point of attachment, now manifesting as an area of broken, granular, slivery-grey Glaucodot; shown in one of the accompanying images.
