A fine thumbnail for this locality and species. Thick curling wires of native silver to 0.4 cm in thickness nice across the front of matrix. This is in very good condition. Located in northeastern Ontario, the Cobalt mining camp was thrust onto the world stage in 1903 following the accidental discovery of rich silver deposits during railway construction, sparking a legendary mining boom. The geology of the region is characterized by Precambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks intruded by a major diabase sill, which acted as the thermal and structural driver for hydrothermal vein formation. These carbonate-rich veins famously hosted spectacular specimens of native silver, often occurring alongside complex cobalt and nickel minerals. While large-scale commercial extraction has long since ceased, the historic tailing piles and old mine dumps remain popular among mineral collectors for yielding stunning wire and dendritic native silver specimens, cementing Cobalt as one of Canada's most historic mineral districts.
