A loose curling wire of native silver. Classic locality.Kongsberg, situated in Buskerud county in southern Norway, lies within the Oslo Rift, a major geological zone characterized by Permian magmatic activity and hydrothermal ore veins. The deposit is world-famous among collectors and historians for its exceptional native silver specimens, which formed within calcite-bearing hydrothermal wire veins cutting through Precambrian schists and gneisses. Silver was first discovered in the area in 1623, leading King Christian IV to establish the Kongsberg Silver Mines in 1624. Over more than three centuries of continuous royal and state-operated mining until operations ceased in 1957, the district produced vast amounts of silver as well as classic mineral specimens, most notably magnificent localized occurrences of wire silver, fluorite, and associated gangue minerals.
