Located in Granite County, Montana, the Black Pine Mine is situated within the western portion of the state where hydrothermal vein deposits cut through Precambrian sedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup. Originally developed in the late nineteenth century as a silver and copper underground mining operation, the site evolved over time as major commercial operations ceased and mineral collectors recognized its extraordinary richness. The mine became world-famous among micromount and thumbnail specimen collectors for producing exceptionally fine secondary copper, silver, and phosphate mineral specimens, including exceptional pyromorphite, pseudomalachite, and silver halides found within oxidized vein zones.
