Developed by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1950 to extract large volumes of low-grade porphyry copper ore, the operation generated over 80 million tons of copper before closing in 1974. Beyond its immense industrial production, the mine became famous among mineral collectors for producing world-class specimens of vibrant blue azurite, green malachite, and brilliant turquoise, cementing Bisbee's legacy as one of the premier mineral localities in North America .
