Renowned for having produced some of the finest crystallized specimens of Smithsonite that the world has seen, the famous Tsumeb mine has not only provided excellent crystals and large specimens, but varieties in a wide range of colours. Traditionally named as varieties based on the dominant trace elements influencing their colour, it is now common practice to simply state 'pink' or 'green' Smithsonite. This pale salmon-pink Smithsonite, of the sort previously called Cobaltoan, or perhaps Manganoan Smithsonite, is extremely well crystallized with an extensive crust of very sharp, thin, bladed rhombic crystals completely lining the sides of a cavity within fine-grained sulphide, dominated by Pyrite. Always a highly sought after variety, the pink colour here is a little paler and airing towards a cream-pink, or pale rose-pink, otherwise at this size and crystal quality it would be double or triple the price if it were the most desirable bubblegum pink. It is interesting to note that this thin, razor-sharp bladed crystal habit of Smithsonite is usually only seen in the pale pink variety, with other colours taking rather different forms. An extremely well-crystallized Tsumeb Smithsonite with the added benefit of colour.
