Renowned for some of the world's finest crystals of Chalcopyrite, both for their size and sharp crystal shape, the Cavnic mine in Romania is a really important mine for mineral collectors. This small cabinet-sized specimen has a core of fine-grained Pyrite and Quartz, but its upper outer surface is totally covered with large Chalcopyrite crystals individually to 1.3 cm across. A few small blue-grey Galena crystals are studded on the surface of the Chalcopyrite and at least one needle-like Quartz crystal protrudes through. There are visible cracks running through some of the Chalcopyrite crystals on the top of the specimen but these do not extend down into the matrix and the crystals seems secure and solid.
