This surprising gem crystal matrix specimen looks very much like a Ukrainian heliodor on matrix of quartz; and yet it is very definitely a yellow spodumene from Afghanistan! It is something that fooled me when I first saw it, I can admit. On closer inspection, it is obvious, but at first glance in a case, not so much. The crystal is complete, with no repairs nor restoration. It measures 14 cm tall and hangs freely, nestled in matrix of quartz for a good contrast of both color and geometry. The stark white quartz really sets off the heliodor-like yellow of the spodumene crystal. This is, so far as I am aware, a one-off piece, unique for what it is and a unique find in an otherwise productive location. While most people are familiar with the pink version of spodumene termed kunzite, this yellow variety (often called triphane) is actually more rare in quality specimens. We believe that this was mined sometime in 2016–2018.
