Established in the late nineteenth century during the Colorado silver boom, the mine initially yielded rich silver and lead ores before becoming a massive producer of zinc and copper through the mid-twentieth century. Beyond its significant industrial mining history, the locality is legendary among mineral collectors for producing world-class specimens of dark brown sphalerite, shiny pyrite crystals, galena, and golden barite from its deep underground sulfide ore bodies and solution cavities.
