This is a gorgeous example of one of these classic gypsum specimens from Winnipeg. Two gem quality beautiful yellow gold twinned crystals of gypsum, the largest almost 3.0 cm in size, coming off of a ball of crystallized gypsum. This is in very good condition all around and brightly fluorescent. From the 1990s or earlier. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. The Red River Floodway near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, is an artificial channel excavated through glacial clay deposits that overlie Paleozoic bedrock. During its construction in the 1960s, workers unearthed remarkable crystal zones containing pristine gypsum specimens, particularly transparent selenite rosettes and twinned blades. This unexpected discovery sparked a vibrant history of mineral collecting, where enthusiasts began digging into the clay layers to recover these fragile, fluorescent crystals that formed within the ancient lacustrine and glacial sediments.
