Superb example for the species with a lustrous black crystal of babingtonite measuring 3.0 x 2.3 x 1.2 cm in size standing straight up and free from a matrix covered by green translucent semi lustrous prehnite. This is in good condition. Collected in the late 2000's. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.The geology of Qiaojia County in Zhaotong, Yunnan, China, is characterized by extensive volcanic and basaltic formations, specifically featuring ancient basalt flows and vuggy cavity systems formed within regional volcanic belts. Mining and collecting history in this remote area largely involve artisanal pockets discovered along rugged terrain near the Yangtze River, where local miners and mineral collectors carefully extract cabinet-quality specimens from weathered rock cavities. This region is internationally famous for producing world-class babingtonite, prized by collectors for yielding exceptionally sharp, jet-black, lustrous crystals that form stunning aesthetic contrasts against pale mint-green cushions of prehnite and transparent quartz frameworks.
