While historically quarried for aggregate and building stone, the mountain became internationally famous among mineral collectors for its cavity-filling deposits. The basalt vesicles contain a diverse assemblage of zeolites, such as analcime, chabazite, mesolite, scolecite, and thomsonite. Hobbyists and scientists have explored these exposures for over a century, establishing the site as one of the premier mineral-collecting localities in the United States.
