Wayne Thompson helped open up exports of fine minerals from Pakistan and by extension, Afghani material which started flowing to the Peshawar markets in the 1980s. This is a piece he himself brought in and prepared, so good for an Afghani ruby that, honestly, I would believe it to be Burmese if it did not have his own label and provenance. Most Afghani rubies have a little pink to them, or have a less waxy luster, or perhaps a more mushy and melted look to them. This piece, however, has all of those qualities at the higher-level of what would normally be thought to be a Burmese ruby specimen from Mogok - blood-red color, sharp faces, and waxy luster. It is a competitive-level thumbnail specimen; one that could easily pose as Burmese but instead represents the top percentile of what is possible in an Afghani ruby specimen. This crystal is 1.6 x 1.3 x 0,8 cm in size. Long in IKONS book author Wayne Thompson's personal collection of Miniatures/Thumbnails built with his daughter, Stevia, when she was young (his label valued this at $3000, as his approximate cost, in his appraisal before the sale of the collection).
