A massive piece of allanite-Ce from this famous locality. The island of Hidra, located in Flekkefjord within Agder County, Norway, is an insular community shaped by a long history of maritime life, coastal defense, and 19th-century mining. Commercial mining operations on the island began during the 1850s and continued until around 1930, focusing primarily on extracting high-purity feldspar and quartz from coarse-grained pegmatite bodies. Geologically, Hidra is situated within the Fennoscandian Shield and is dominated by Proterozoic granitic and gneissic host rocks cut by prominent granitic pegmatite dykes. These coarse-grained passages formed from residual magmatic fluids, yielding large mineral crystals and accessory phases such as biotite, magnetite, ilmenite, and rare-earth-bearing minerals.
