A polished piece beautiful amber from this classic area.The Kaliningrad Amber Combine, situated on the Sambia Peninsula near Yantarny in the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia (formerly Palmnicken, East Prussia), is the world's premier locality for Baltic amber, containing over ninety percent of the planet's known amber reserves. Geologically, this immense succinite deposit is hosted within the Eocene-age Blue Earth, a glauconite-rich, marine clay-sand layer formed approximately thirty-five to forty-five million years ago when vast river systems washed fossilized resin from ancient Paleogene-age coniferous forests into a shallow marine basin. The resulting fossilized resin is celebrated for its rich variations in clarity, butterscotch or honey coloration, and incredibly preserved biological inclusions like prehistoric insects and plant fragments trapped within the organic polymer matrix. Historically, while shoreline beachcombing occurred for centuries under Teutonic and Prussian control, large-scale industrial open-pit quarrying and mechanical mining commenced in 1872 under the pioneering firm Stantien and Becker. Following World War II and the regional border shifts of 1945, the Soviet government nationalized the Palmnicken works to establish the state-owned Kaliningrad Amber Factory in 1947, transitioning the deep open-pit operations into the massive Primorsky and Palmnicken pits. These highly industrialized operations, which utilize high-pressure water cannons to wash away overburden and extract tons of raw material annually, have run continuously under Russian state control through multiple corporate modernizations into 2026.
