This is a superb miniature of haüyne from Germany, the world's only location for such brilliantly shiny gem-quality crystals and rough material. It is named in honor the famed 19th Century crystallographer and mineralogist, Abbé René Just Haüy. This mineral has always been rare with crystals even more rare; and the material is often gemmy enough to cut gemstones from (which sell for high prices!). This German locality sets the standard. This exceptional miniature matrix specimen hosts a single, large, 1 cm, glassy and gemmy, vibrant blue crystal displaying a conchoidal fracture in the front to show off its incredible color and transparency. Most such material is similar, as it forms in these tight basalt nodules. This is simply huge for the locality and displays nicely nestled in a vug in the volcanic host rock with a glowing, intense blue saturated hue. It is simply gorgeous and this is one of the best large german examples we have seen, especially as the color is balanced to a focal point centered in the matrix. It would also cut a large, and valuable, gemstone should one wish (a tragedy, but i have seen it happen as the gems are so vibrant and easy to sell at frankly a higher price than the specimen, in this size). Haüyne is a rare sodium-calcium-aluminum silicate-sulfate occurring in quartz-poor volcanic rocks, such as in this basalt nodule. This is a beautiful piece that originates from the Paul Stahl collection. We believe he obtained it from a small discovery in the early 2000s.
