Calcite with Hematite

Unknown Owner
Classic beautiful pink crystallized calcite across the top of a hematite matrix. In good condition, this is classic material for this long closed Wisconsin locality. Originally obtained by Ray around 1950.The Montreal Mine in Iron County, Wisconsin, was an underground iron mine in the Gogebic Range that was developed in the late 1800s to exploit hematite iron ore in Precambrian rocks. It became one of the important iron producers in the region during the early 20th century and supported the nearby town of Montreal. Mining operations declined after World War II, and the mine closed in 1962. Today the site is part of the historic iron mining heritage of northern Wisconsin.
