Guilleminite with Digenite, Malachite

Unknown Owner
Rare yellow crystalline and massive guillemininite throughout this matrix with digenite and malachite. The Musonoi Mine, located near Kolwezi in the Katanga Copper Belt of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the most important copper and cobalt mining operations in the region. Mining activity began during the early to mid 20th century under Belgian administration, with extensive underground workings developed to extract rich stratiform copper cobalt ore bodies hosted in sedimentary rocks. Over time, operations expanded and evolved with changing ownership and mining methods, including both underground and open pit activity. The mine has been a major contributor to copper and cobalt production and remains significant in the global supply of these metals, while also being well known among collectors for its diverse suite of secondary minerals.Guilleminite is a rare uranium bearing mineral that occurs in the oxidized zones of copper deposits such as Musonoi, where it forms as bright yellow to orange platy crystals and coatings. At this locality, guilleminite is often found in association with copper minerals such as digenite and malachite, creating striking color contrasts between the vivid yellow guilleminite, metallic gray digenite, and green malachite. These minerals form through complex oxidation and enrichment processes involving uranium and copper bearing solutions. Specimens from Musonoi showing these associations are highly valued for their rarity and aesthetic appeal, as well as for their representation of the unique geochemical environment of the Katanga Copper Belt.
