Ulexite with Calcite
The borate deposits of California have produced some really beautiful mineral specimens of a variety of unusual species like this crystal of ulexite associated with calcite. Few are as unusual as ulexite that normally occurs as chunky, silky lustered fragments that transmit light along their length and are often termed "TV rock" for its fiber optic-like optical properties. This particular piece is an actual crystal of ulexite that is terminated, which is incredibly rare! This white crystal displays a superior silky luster and is pearlescent. It measures four and a half inches in length and is an inch wide! Three sides are complete and has a perfect termination, however, one side is cleavage for the full length, but doesn't detract at all. There is a minor sliver of matrix attached at the bottom along with a pocket near the base that hosts a translucent, rich honey colored, pagoda-style calcite composed of stacked rhombohedrons. that is an inch tall. It is superb for the species and very rare as a specimen, instead of simply as cleavage masses! This specimen is three-dimensional and displays nicely. UNIQUE!
