Graphite
Graphite, 9.5 cm, from Stony Point, Rockland County, New York. The crystal, one of the largest I have ever seen of graphite, is hexagonal and sits flat on the matrix. The crystal is flexible. I found this specimen in an outcrop in a thorny area of the woods near Bear Mountain State Park. The area has numerous graphite findings, including some on display in the Bear Mountain Trailside Museum, but this is the best graphite specimen I have seen from lower New York State in terms of size and crystal form.
