Azurite with Malachite and Chalcoalumite (circa 1900)

This is a superb, old-time azurite and malachite specimen from Bisbee that would date to the era of the Czar mine and late 1800s into the early 1900s heyday here. It is a shocking color saturation combined with sparkle, one of the best of this "old Bisbee style" that we have seen in the size range. It sparkles from afar in a way that is hard to explain, and really not at all similar to anything from Tsumeb or Milpillas, which accounts for the enduring fame of such pieces among mineral collectors. This is a large vuggy ore matrix with a protected pocket lined with glistening, royal blue Azurite microcrystals. There are also a few smaller vugs (pockets) on the piece with crystalline azurite areas, and some are filled in with rich green malachite that is crudely crystalline. Bands of bright blue azurite beautifully frame the pockets and alternate with bright green malachite bands, accented with a pastel mineral (pale blue chalcoalumite) atop. This is a fairly rare, hydrous, copper, aluminum, sulfate that was found rarely at Bisbee at the time. The color contrasts are superlative and the central area filled with tiny azurite crystals is indeed, striking. Classic Bisbee material!
