Tsavorite is a variety of grossular garnet characterized by rich green color caused by trace amounts of vanadium and chromium. Crystals typically form as well-formed, dodecahedral or trapezohedral polygons with a vitreous to adamantine luster and transparent to translucent clarity. High-quality specimens are known from East Africa, particularly the Asteroit area of Tanzania and the Tsavo region of Kenya, where crystals can occur in layered metamorphic rocks and associated garnets. Collectors value Tsavorite for its intense, saturated greens that range from emerald to bottle-green, often visible in well-crystallized crystals and gem-quality material.

About Tsavorite

The appeal lies in both color and crystal quality. When faceted, Tsavorite garnet displays strong brilliance and excellent durability, making it a favorite among collectors who seek striking mineral specimens as well as gem-quality material. Specimens from notable localities tend to exhibit clean termination faces and minimal inclusions, enhancing display value. As with other garnets, Tsavorite is relatively hard and resistant to scratching, contributing to its reputation as a rewarding addition to a collecting cabinet.
