Clausthalite is a lead selenide mineral that crystallizes in the isometric system, typically forming metallic to submetallic, sometimes octahedral or cube-like crystals with a steely luster. Clear or tarnished faces can reveal a dark gray to black color, occasionally displaying a pale brass or greenish tint in reflected light. It often occurs as microscopic grains or in association with other selenium-bearing minerals, and is frequently found in hydrothermal veins and replacement deposits where lead and selenium are concentrated.

About Clausthalite
Notable specimens come from historic European localities as well as high-grade hydrothermal environments, with Germany and the United Kingdom among the most represented sources. Smaller discoveries appear in Russia and Tanzania, contributing to a diverse global corpus of clausthalite crystals. Collectors value well-formed crystals and masses that show a clean, metallic surface and sharp edges, which can highlight the mineral’s reflective luster and geometric form. Despite its relative rarity in superb crystallization, clausthalite remains a sought-after accessory for its distinctive chemistry and its role in illustrating selenium-bearing parageneses.
