Description
This stunning large thumbnail Acanthite from San Juan de Rayas mine (Reyes mine) in Mexico is from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021). Reyes mine is a historic silver mine dating back more than a century, but has continued to produce, even in recent times. Indeed, the Guanajuato mining region was the world's largest silver producer during the late 18th century, producing near a third of all silver. Renowned for small, but exceptional silver sulphides and silver sulphosalts, Acanthite is one of those that has been found in amazing specimens. Sculptural in form, the stepped crystals displayed in this specimen are in amazing condition - sharply defined and free from damage, and reaching over 1 cm on edge. A really beautiful Acanthite.
