Description
A fine parallel group of golden-honey yellow prismatic Baryte crystals measuring to 9.7 cm tall, displaying excellent form, and remaining attached to a small amount of red-brown Hematite matrix measuring 3.0 x 2.5 x 0.3 cm. The crystal are essentially translucent, but do contain many transparent zones and all have a bright, glassy lustre. Although without doubt from the Dalmellington mine in west Cumbria, there remains uncertainty just where this mine was situated, but is typically thought to be just south of Frizington. The Dalmellington Iron Company was a Scottish company and it is from this the name Dalmellington derives. Despite this uncertainty, the Dalmellington mine remains one of the most iconic localities in west Cumbria with its specimen being high sought. If you visited the special exhibit European Classics some years ago at the Munich Show, you mat recall the NHM London's stunning Dalmellington Barytes at the exhibit's entrance. This specimen is accompanied with a printed and and handwritten Austrian label (No. 2066), probably dating from the last thirty years. Just take a look at the video and you'll see what a beauty this is!
