A grouping of sparkling lustrous sharp platy ruby crystals to 3.0 cm in height coming off calcite. This attractive and unique specimen is in terrific condition all around. Brightly fluorescent. Mogok, located in Mandalay State, Myanmar, is a historic gem-mining region whose continuous operations began around 1217 CE (traditionally founded by Shan hunters) and continue through the present day under a mix of local, commercial, and artisanal control rather than having a fixed closing date. Geologically, the area is centered on the Mogok Metamorphic Belt, which was shaped by the India-Asia tectonic convergence. The region consists predominantly of high-grade metamorphic rocks, notably calcite-dolomite marbles formed during the Eocene to Oligocene epochs, alongside intrusive granites and syenites. These unique, iron-poor carbonate environments created ideal high-temperature conditions for crystallizing world-famous gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, and spinels.
