Suolunite is a rare hydrated sorosilicate of calcium known from just a handful of localities worldwide. The specimen of Suolunite we have here is from the Mine Lac D'Amiante (Lake Asbestos mine) Quebec, Canada, a major Asbestos producing openpit. It is probably from the famous small discovery in 1997 when only about 40 specimens were recovered from a single pocket, most of which went to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Most of the specimens were a lavender to grey colour - the lilac-blue colour seen here, being the rarest and most desirable, particularly for gem cutting! This small cabinet specimen consists of a druse of terminated crystals forming a botryoidal like surface, with a pleasing lilac-blue colouration. The edges of the specimen display a columnar-like radial form. A truly remarkable Suolunite, from a one-off discovery.
