Description
This oversized-thumbnail, or small miniature, is a splendid three-dimensional group of intermixed Smithsonite and Cerussite crystals which together provide an excellent juxtaposition of colour and habit. The Smithsonite, a zinc carbonate, forms long and slender crystals with long and sloping sharp terminations, the majority appearing dark-chocolaty-red due to inclusions of likely iron oxides. All these crystals occur in either small (3-4 mm) or large (1.2 cm) sizes, binary-style, with no in-between sizes, giving a hedgehog appearance where the bigger crystals project out. Amongst the Smithsonite sit glassy and colourless Cerussite crystals, typically as broad tabular or blocky chisel-tipped crystals, occasionally forming twins which become partly reticulated. A little beauty!
