Crocoite
Once known as 'Red Lead', or 'Red Chromate of Lead' one can immediately see why this beautiful mineral found in the Ural Mountains was once revered as more valuable than gold. First found in the Berezovskii deposit at Ekaterinburg in the Middle Urals of Russia, specimens were obtained by all of the great museums across Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Later renamed as Crocoite, immense deposits found in Tasmania in the late 19th century took the limelight but the specimens from Berezovskii deposit remain highly collectible and full of character, and it is of course the Type Locality. This superb cabinet-sized display specimen presents the classic association with white vein Quartz in a buff-coloured sandstone host rock.
