Absolute gem quality glassy colorless crystal of terminated barite with a small shard.of matrix coming off one side. In super condition. The Book Cliffs near Grand Junction in Mesa County, Colorado, form a prominent stretch of steep, stratified cliffs exposed along the northern edge of the Grand Valley, comprised primarily of Late Cretaceous marine sedimentary layers such as the Mancos Shale and the overlying Mesaverde Group. Mining and collecting history in this area centers heavily on the gray Mancos Shale badlands, where weathering continuously reveals pockets of exceptional mineral specimens, most notably lustrous, sharp barite crystals. These barite crystals typically formed during diagenetic processes when barium-rich fluids migrated through fractures and open cavities within the marine shale beds, precipitating out of solution as clean, tabular to prismatic crystals ranging from clear to amber and ice-blue shades. Local collectors and mineral enthusiasts have scoured these shale exposures for decades, prizing the Book Cliffs barites for their crisp sharpness, high transparency, and striking aesthetic contrast against their dark matrix host rocks.
