Quite different to other Mindingi mine specimens we have seen, this cabinet-sized, open Quartz-lined vug is dotted with hundreds of globular dark green Malachite crystals but it is the white Quartz that is most unusual. The majority of the specimen is a curved bed of crystallized Quartz typically a little over 1 cm thick, and beginning with slightly smoky, greyish-brown translucent crystals but their surface is encrusted in opaque white, slightly resinous Quartz which provides a striking backdrop to the later deposition of many small balls of green Malachite dotted across their surface. Within the cavity, the white Quartz crystals are terminated with six-sided pyramids, but with no prism sides visible, in what is sometimes termed 'stumpy' Quartz. The whole cavity is lined with these pointed pyramids alongside each other, with all of the crystals reaching slightly less than 1 cm across and a few showing a greyish underlying colour. Small amounts of rusty orange host rock are attached to the back of Quartz vein around the rear of the sample. Overall, a quite distinctive and unusual DR Congo piece.
