This very attractive Brazilian matrix-hosted Elbaite tourmaline comes from the finds of recent years at Coronel Murta in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais state. The sharply formed 5 cm long hexagonal prism with its perfectly glassy flat pinacoid termination and distinctive colour-zoning from a raspberry-red core to teal-blue tip and side edges is an absolute classic from Coronel Murta. It has one repair where the top half of the tourmaline crystal has been reattached to a short base section, but otherwise this is an immaculate crystal, with a super-sharp termination. A rounded, bright white rosetted aggregate of platy Albite (var. Cleavelandite) crystal provides a classy base from which the brightly coloured Elbaite crystal rises. Internally, the Albite base is intergrown with pale lilac pearlescent Lepidolite mica and small clusters of Lepidolite crystals are dotted up one side of the Elbaite crystal. This is an extremely high class Brazilian gem tourmaline which makes a stunning small cabinet sized display piece. With good directional lighting the colours of this Elbaite really come alive. It comes with a custom-made Sunnywood acryllic display stand.
