The remote Malkhan Pegmatite Field in Chitinskaya Oblast', Transbaikalia, Eastern-Siberia, Russia is renowned for some of the world's finest red tourmalines - the variety Rubellite. Even relatively short prismatic crystals command high prices, making this statuesque terminated 11.9 cm tall crystal an absolute beauty. From the front it looks amazing, with multiple smaller narrow crystals growing up the sides in a 'classic' tourmaline style and with prominent natural vertical striations as growth lines. At its summit, the main 'crystal' splits into several wonderful sloping terminations. Its colour is very rich, but dappled, with some extremely dark cranberry-red areas , particularly around the terminations, and others much pinker with milky inclusions. On the other side, the prism is coated in a sweeping area of tiny Rubellite Elbaite crystals with a patch of white Albite near its base. An extremely classy and imposing Malkhan tourmaline.
