Romania is the classic, old-time source of Sylvanite, a rare silver gold telluride species, but when it was first described, way back in the 1830s, the mines were part of the Hungarian Empire. This extremely rich and very displayable small cabinet sized Sylvanite specimen presents all of the superb features of the Type Locality at Baia de Arieș, Alba County, Romania including the flat, mesh-like graphic intergrowth of flat-lying silvery-grey metallic crystals along a joint surface in Rhodochrosite-Quartz veinstone. However, those keen-eyed amongst you will have spotted that the locality provided is Fata Baii (Facebánya), also in Alba County, but a little to the south and near to the town of Zlatna. Fata Baii is more famous for Native Tellurium and it is thought that the previous collector made a mistake in labelling, but for now it has not been corrected incase it is genuine. Either way, the detail of the fine Sylvanite crystals is really superb and these old-time Romanian specimens are so desirable.
