An outstanding miniature specimen of lustrous deep orange yellow prismatic slightly translucent semi lustrous legrandite crystals. There is very little matrix attached on the bottom side, this is complete all around and in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark, who acquired the piece while in Mapimi in 1976. Note the price paid locally at that time was $80 for the specimen, I think that a lot of money during that time. In Mexico free mineral specimen.Situated near Mapimi in Durango, Mexico, the Ojuela Mine is a world-famous lead, zinc, and silver deposit set within heavily oxidized limestone host rocks. Operations began in the late sixteenth century during the Spanish colonial era, and centuries of mining eventually exposed vast underground caves rich in secondary minerals. Collecting history at Ojuela reached a high point in the mid-twentieth century when miners uncovered world-class specimens of legrandite, a rare hydrated zinc arsenate mineral known for its intense canary-yellow color and brilliant fan-like crystal sprays. Today, the site remains legendary among collectors as the undisputed premier locality for fine legrandite specimens.
