The heart of Brazil's gold production in the 18th century, Ouro Preto has also produced a variety of significant gem crystals, Euclase among them. Indeed, Ouro Preto is the TYPE LOCALITY for this rare and highly desirable species. This single crystal is broad and thin, like an arrowhead. One prism face is glassy and striated, while the reverse side has more of a silky luster. The termination is smooth and glassy, and the base is a healed contact. The crystal itself is completely FLAWLESS. Interestingly, Euclase has both cleavage and fracture, and the very tip of the termination has some of both. That may seem to be serious, but for context, flawless gem rough above 1 gram is very rare. This excellent crystal is a very significant 32 g for an example from this locale! Exchanged to us out of the renowned collection of Dr. Stephen Smale, who purchased it in Brazil in the 1970s-80s. It is better in person.
