A set of three green massive examples of actinolite. The size provided is for the larger of the three examples. Good locality examples for the species. The Ropes Gold Mine, established by Julius Ropes in 1881, marked the beginning of commercial gold mining in Michigan. Initial operations continued through 1897 before the site closed due to low profitability. The property was later reopened and actively mined by the Callahan Mining Corporation during the mid-1980s before permanently shutting down. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Archean-aged Ishpeming Greenstone Belt of the Superior Province. The gold mineralization occurs primarily in quartz veins and shear zones hosted within altered ultramafic rocks, specifically serpentinized peridotites and metabasalts of the Archean basement.
